Getting To Know 40/40 Club (Barclays Center, Brooklyn, NY)

Just as unique as its name, the 40/40 Club in Barclays Center is one of the most happening Brooklyn nightclubs in town. It belongs to a chain of sports lounges and bars owned by Jay-Z, the popular rapper and hip-hop artist. The 40/40 Club gets its name from the baseball term ’40/40′ which is used for describing a baseball player who achieves forty home runs along with forty stolen bases in one season. Now, this is a very difficult achievement in the context of Major League Baseball, which is why only a few players have been able to bag this coveted title. The players in the 40/40 Club are Jose Canseco (in 1988), Barry Bonds (in 1996), Alex Rodriguez (in 1998) and last but not least, Alfonso Soriano (in 2006).

A good club is not just about the music but also about the food, hospitality and environment. The 40/40 Club at Barclays Center scores high in all these departments. Upon entering the club, the guests would be mesmerized by the sheer opulence and creativity in the club’s design and architecture. Measuring about nine thousand square feet in size, the venue can seat about three hundred and fifty people, and is located on the suite level of Barclays Center, which is home to the NBA’s Brooklyn Nets.

The food served here is the upscale traditional American one with a Brooklyn twist. It is served on a la carte basis only. Some of the popular picks amongst visitors are Red Hook Lobster roll, Nathans French Fries, Shrimp Cocktail, Nathans Hot Dog Trio, Brooklyn Burger Sliders, Tribe Hummus, 40/40 chicken wings and stinky Brooklyn Dips. Another popular snack amongst visitors here is tortilla chips.

The club takes reservations, but only on days when it is open. These reservations are generally for corporate events such as an after-event party or a private celebration such as a birthday or anniversary. The venue is perfect for those who are looking for a quality dining experience. The 40/40 chain of nightclubs in NYC gained recognition when its owner, Jay-Z referenced them in his song “Dirt off your shoulder” in 2003 in an attempt to promote his investment.

Opened in 2012, this club is still going strong and is a favorite spot of celebrities, baseball fans, socialites, etc. It was the fourth 4040 Club opened by the chain, the first was in New York City in 2003, the second in Atlantic City in 2005 and the third in Las Vegas in 2007. Apart from this one, there is another club opened in Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. At the moment, only three of these clubs are still in business, the Atlantic City and Las Vegas ones have shut down.

The décor of the 40/40 Club is one of its main USP. It is a combination of memorabilia from the greatest games in the United States of America. There is a ‘Hall of Fame’ located here that is home to the jerseys autographed by various sports celebrities themselves. These jerseys are hung along with other sports memorabilia such as Kurt Angle’s WWF championship belt, the autographed boxing gloves used in the boxing match titled “The Fight of the Century” that took place between the champion Joe Frazier and the challenger Muhammad Ali. Thus, visiting this mini ‘museum’ at the club is almost like taking a stroll down memory lane!

All 40/40 sports bars have VIP rooms located upstairs for those who want a private time in the lap of luxury, so this one at Barclays Center is no exception. The club is accessible only to ticket holders of NBA games, concerts or other events taking place at the arena. Thus, the club is open only when the Barclays Center arena is hosting events. If you can get a chance to visit the club, do not let it slip because this 4040 Club provides one of the best club experiences in the Big Apple.
